NEW LA BUSINESS TAX LAW for 2007
This may or maynot relate to you. But ask your accountant. Casting directors should fall under the Creative Artist Exemption (along with art directors, costume designers, editors, etc.) and if you have been paying it you may not have to pay a business tax renewal. Check with your accountant or tax preparer about LA Municipal Code Section 21.29(B)

ALERT RE LIONSGATE: They have set up a way to pay Casting Directors and Associates benefits through a company they have set up called
invisible Productions. If you are being paid through that company you are getting benefits. If you are working for Lionsgate and your paycheck says another company, you may have an issue and should contact the union.
MAKE SURE HEALTH PLAN HAS YOUR INFO!!
The Health plan does not have everyone's correct address so if you have not yet qualified:
BE PRE-EMPTIVE (their request)
Call them or email (email@example.com) and make sure they have a correct address for you.
Call them and make sure that the covered hours you have worked are being properly posted.
This is an area where you need to take control and audit the situation personally.
If something isn't there that you think should be...contact Ed Duffy(LA) or Terri Cassaletta (NY) at the Teamsters about what to do
But to Qualify for Insurance...you have to work COVERED EMPLOYMENT WITH A SIGNATORY COMPANY (most will be able to sign our agreement...call your business agent if you have questions about this)
MOST colleagues are being great about insisting that potential employers who are non-signatories cover Casting Directors on their productions. And our organizers in NY and LA are signing these people up in droves...(including producers in other countries! even one in Korea!)...so remember...always tell employers that you want your benefit contributions paid. Click on "Contracts" to the left and see a paragraph that you should include in all your contracts and Deal Memos
REMEMBER – you MUST negotiate to have the studio pay for an Associate (particularly in TV, where it is not necessarily "the norm" for the employer to pay for all staff). Even if you cannot get the studio to pay the actual amount that you are paying an associate, you MUST dictate that you will be using an associate rather than an assistant if you want to get benefits for that person. Studios will try to use the word “assistant” or “administrative expense”. Tell them that you work with an associate.
